Today's querent is dealing with an addiction that is usually kept hidden by their shadow self.  A shadow is the side of a personality that contains all the things, thoughts, and parts that someone doesn't want to admit to having, except that today our querent is in the process of [1] bringing to light and [2] using a part of their personality that'd been rejected.  By doing this, our querent is breaking an old cycle, and embarking on a new cycle of solitary or private pleasure.  Maybe not exactly 50, but certainly 20 or 30 shades of gray and guilty pleasures.
